Do you consider yourself a kind person? How do you judge kindness in others – by how they or the general vibe they give off? Do certain situations elicit kindness, or is it a trait you carry inside yourself no matter the circumstances? In psychological research these are complicated questions, involving the interaction of inborn, situation, and behavior. The earliest personality research in the field looked at traits, distilled by many personality psychologists into the Big Five, or the five factor model of personality. These traits are 6. Openness to experience, 7. , 8. Extraversion, 9. , and 5. People tend to score the similarly on scales that measure these traits over and over again, even if they complete the scales months or years apart. This tells us that each trait represents stable predispositions within each of us. These and many other studies seem to paint a decisive picture of harried, changeable human beings without any sort of constant personality. However, when the findings are examined from a different angle, we see something else. Even when an experiment is designed to discourage, for example, when the theology students were told they were late, a small but steady minority helped the fallen man anyway. Our research examined 786 studies of helping and found that over 95% of people helped spontaneously in control groups without encouragement and that slightly less than 95% helped in conditions that actively discouraged helping. This suggests that situations might interact with traits to determine whether a person will behave kindly, and that discouragement will not stop some people from being helpful.  Of the Big Five traits, agreeableness has shown the most consistent correlation with kind and helpful behaviors. Right now, our research group is performing a series of experiments to test these ideas about kindness, its origins, and the sort of situations that bring out kind behavior.

What Makes a Person Kind Psychology Today

In our first study, the trait of kindness predicted helping, but neither agreeableness nor mood did. By looking at both enduring traits, as assessed by personality scales, and momentary events that influence a person’s mood, we are trying to figure out which factors best predict kind actions. Because we are examining both trait and situation at once, we will also be able to see how these factors interact. We hope that, these studies will help tug at the knot of influences that contribute to who acts kindly, when, and why.  It is very self-flattering to think that we can be so fully aware that no outside influence or unreflective inclination will alter how we act, but this level of awareness and self-control is more super human than human. There is very strong evidence that much of what we humans do is influenced by factors of which we are not aware. On the positive side, one of the great ideas about virtue is that we can make goodness a habit that we do without really thinking about it. Being kind is an important way of bringing meaning to our own lives. It also brings joy to the lives of others around us. Being kind allows us to communicate better, be more compassionate, and also to be a positive force in people's lives. Kindness has its true source deep within you, and while some people are innately kind, it's something that everyone can cultivate by choice. Not quite! You don't want to force kindness. While you can genuinely tell someone they look good if you believe they do, you shouldn't compliment people just to please them or to seem like you care. You don't have to plan out exactly what you will do each day, but if you start every day with this goal in mind, it can help you get into the habit of thinking about how you can be kind to others. Choose another answer! Nope! While calling your grandma more often is a great idea, it does not necessarily help you make kindness a habit. Set a goal to call your grandma x number of times a week but also aim to help others, too. Try again. I often hear people saying what kind of [singular noun] rather than what kind of a [singular noun]. Thinking in depth about it, either could be considered correct (i. E. Neither is positively incorrect), and both are common. It's true that an article should often be used before a noun. Hence the following is incorrect: I accidentally jogged the arm of a person walking by. I accidentally jogged the arm of the person walking by. Although they focus on complaints about family members and co-workers, hidden between the lines in most of these rather long missives is the implicit query, Why do I put up with this? And that begs the deeper question, What kind of person am I? To achieve meaningful behavior change, the most salient question is this: No easy question to answer. But a good starting place is to decide what you want to motivate you. There's always a choice, provided that you don't spend your life on automatic pilot or wondering what kind of person you are. This post and the next will cover the motivational choice most likely to produce growth and psychological well being: the creation of value.

There is a unique drive within humans to create value, to invest appreciation, time, energy, effort, and sacrifice in certain persons, groups, objects, and behaviors. Note that we don't literally experience value so much as create it. A sunset has value only if we actively invest the time and effort to appreciate it.
